Start by accepting that you always have a choice about what you feed into your mind, that is, what you pay attention to and how you interpret things in your life.
This choice is well represented in the picture below:
You can choose where to see white circles by staring at that particular intersection. Surrounding circles will appear as black.
And you can choose whether to interpret this common item as a letter "B" or the number "13".
Choosing one or the other generates completely different outcomes
Effective Thinking and Mind Power starts by learning
- The effective way to look at events in life and how to best interpret difficulties
- When to act and when is prudent not to
- How to respond the two most fundamental questions in life: What do I want? How do I get it?
These basic concepts amalgamate more than a hundred years of psychological research, comprising them into a 4-step main strategy designed to deal effectively with life situations. Described in details in Chapter II of the book.
Mind Power is, in essence, learning to create appropriate Subconscious intentions the real force behind your failures and successes
You may have not noticed but your intentions are mostly subconscious. Often, you are unaware that you have them. And every action you take, every wish you have, every emotion you feel, responds to an intention to achieve a particular objective.
You may be striving to have a more rewarding job but your inner intentions may be directing you towards a different objective.
Your subconscious mind creates your intentions from your thoughts; from how you look at and interpret things.
The brain is made up of neurons, and neurons form patterns called mental representations (like movies in our head). These neuronal paths manufacture everything we feel and do. All our intentions live in these mental scripts, and everything starts with an intention (mostly subconscious) arising from these patterns.
Your thoughts cause neurons to fire and modify Mental representations. This is how your intentions, which lead to your failures and successes, are created and modified.
Before making full use of your thinking power, you need to lay down the foundations by cleansing your mind, by eradicating worrying and negative thinking.
"Yeah, but, How do you stop worrying?"
- By learning to control your thoughts!
And the easiest way is to learn about the 'Though-Stopping-Techniques' is described in Chapter II in the book
There are six such techniques. Here is the simplest one: The Awareness Technique
When you are feeling worried or upset, make an effort to become aware that you are (or have been) thinking negatively, with the intention of stopping these thoughts. A simple question such as, 'Why am I upset?' or 'What have I been thinking to feel this way?' may be enough to prompt this awareness. Awareness will then act as a deterrent, deactivating the unwanted thoughts.
Other techniques to stop negative thinking and worries comprise of more elaborate psychological strategies (For example, 'detaching yourself from your own thinking').
